As he was born in area of the Swan River Colony, his language group is assumed to be Whadjuk, and his Beeliar[1] This is said to no longer exist, and was one of five clans in the area, where the city of Perth emerged. Ancestors of Yagan prefer to identify with the 'Noongar' cultural block or 'Nation'.

          Beeliar is shown as Midgegooroo's Territory, on the south side of the Canning River, from the coastline to the Darling ranges, as recorded by Robert Lyon in 18
