Depuis le début de son travail dans le domaine de l’art moderne Andréi Nakov s’est orienté vers les origines de l’art abstrait (travail de maîtrise à l’Université de Varsovie sur Mikolaj Ciurlionis, publication à Paris en 1967) et tout naturellement vers l’œuvre de Vassily Kandinsky.

À la fin des années soixante Nina Kandinsky lui confiait la traduction française du texte « Violette » (paru dans les écrits de Kandinsky, publiés à Paris par les éditions Denoël). Par la suite, sur la recommandation de son directeur de thèse – André Chastel – il rédigea en 1968 l’article « Kandinsky » dans l’Encyclopaedia Universalis.
